From the New York Thruway, I-87, take Exit 15B to NY 17 northbound. Continue to NY 17A. Go left here and follow NY 17A about 13 miles west to the northern outskirts of Greenwood Lake and the intersection with NY 210. Go left on NJ 210. Follow signs for this route through Greenwoods Lake Village. In approximately half a mile this route makes a turn to the right (west), then turns left and continues south. The marina and parking for the State Line Trail are about 4 mils from NY 17A, just after the road crosses into New Jersey.

My wife and I parked at the State Line Trail about a month ago and wanted to clarify regarding parking here. The marina is on the east side of the road the lake side and you can't park there at all. On the west side, across from the marina, there is a gravel driveway leading up hill, that has two levels of parking. It's a bit confusing, because the first level of parking is also marina parking, and you shouldn't use that either. However, if you continue up the driveway to the top level, there is space for about 3 to 5 cars next to the NJ State Park kiosk. This is legal just don't block off any marina equipment that may be stored off to the side. So don't be confused by the initial appearance of the lot just keep going all the way to the top. There is a sign that explicitly bans parking after 8 pm, so this is for day hikes only. Also, be warned that the State Line Trail is quite a difficult climb we came down it and that was bad enough. 11/26/19 The coordinates at the intersection of the AT with the Sate Line Trail are 41.191715, -74.343964.

The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the entrance to the parking area mentioned in the previous listing. The State Line Trail is a blue-blazed trail that climbs 1.2 miles to meet the AT. There is no direct road access to this end of the section. 11/26/19The State Line Trail does not meet the AT exactly at the NY/NJ border. You have to travel .2 miles north on the AT from the State Line Trail in order to observe the actual NY/NJ border. On Sunday 8/6/2017 there were at least 7 cars parked at the 3rd level of the parking lot across from the Marina and more parked on the 2nd level. The State Line Trail is clearly marked and there was a port-a-potty in the parking lot. Very rugged climb. Very clear directions painted on rocks at the intersection of State Line Trail and AT. If you go into Street View from the map posted above, you should get a view to the west. The main building of the marina is on the other side of the road. The driveway that you will be looking at is the entrance. Go all the way up and back to the top of the hill that's where the hiker parking is. You can't see it real well in this picture but it's the area behind the small white sign in the distance in the center of the picture. 11/26/19

It was simple to find by putting Greenwood Lake Marina into our GPS. The Marina is on the water side, parking to hike is directly across the street. Parking is a mess. There is a sign posted that reads hikers park on the left, and I would say when we went (October 2020) there were spots for approximately 20 cars for hikers. It was full when we arrived, so we parked along the shoulder of the main road. The road is busy and cars fly - so use caution.

I have a few things to note about this hike that I think are helpful. Our purpose of the hike was to go from the marina parking lot to the NJ/NY state line. For that we used a map - for some reason I can't put the link here - from the Abram Hewitt State Forest site and followed the blue line. The route on this particular trail officially ends atop a rock that is marked S (south), N (north), and SL (State Line trail). BUT if you head north a minute or two, you'll come to the NJ/NY state line. I was disappointed that there was no clear overview on this hike nor at the NJ/NY border, but I'm sure it was my research that failed in that department. I was hoping for wide open, fall foliage, blue-sky views for days. There is none of that on the State Line trail. I previously read that the hike was rated difficult or extremely difficult but we forged on with our two kids ages 3 1/2 and 6 1/2 anyway. Needless to say, they did awesome and we finally made it to the NJ/NY line after 1:15:00 up. We stopped for pictures and many breaks. The terrain is rugged with lots of large rocks and visible tree roots, not to mention the usual trail hazards like branches, leaves, etc. It is steep. I did the hike in my trail running shoes and did just fine, but I probably should have worn my boots with more ankle support. The way down was certainly easier in terms of how hard we were working/heart rate/breathing, but it was the way down where 3 of us slipped on loose rocks or gravel on top of rocks. It took us 50:00 to get down, again with the 2 small children. All in all the hike was great and again our main purpose was to get to the NJ/NY state line. But I wish there had been an awesome view or overlook on the path we chose. Have fun hikers! Hope this helps! p.s. Our children weren't the only ones hiking the day we went. We saw other, older kids and another toddler making their way up. Don't get discouraged by the steep, rugged terrain. 10/11/20

From Vernon, NJ take Rt 94 north into New York. Turn right on Warwick Turnpike (there is a shopping center and Shoprite food store here. Turn left on Conklin Rd. 1.2 miles. Take this 0.7 miles to T intersection at Bowen Rd. Turn left on Bowen Rd. Take this 0.9 miles to T intersection and take sharp right onto Brady Rd. Continue 0.9 miles to the state line wher the road becomes Longhouse Road. the trail crossing is 0.7 miles further.

There is a 375 foot road walk between the northbound and southbound trailheads on this road. The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate midpoint of this road section. GPS: N41.1956 W74.3715. There is limited parking along the road at Longhouse Dr. in the form of several pull overs 7/17/20

The above route will also work for the north. See Mile 3.6. From the intersection of NY 17A and NY 94 in Warwick, proceed south 1.4 miles on NY 94 , go left on Warwick Turnpike and proceed as above.

To reach this trail crossing from I-84 follow the instructions for NJ 94 (Mile 9.4) as far as the point wherre NY 17A diverges to the east in Warwick. Continue straight ahead on NY 94 for another 1.4 miles, then go left onto Warwick Turnpike (County Road 21). The trail crossing is another 2.7 miles. This is after the road crosses into NJ. There are parking pull-offs on both sides of the road. GPS: N41.2015 W74.3914

Free parking right on the trail (for 6-8 cars), Extremely busy road. BE CAREFUL!!! Updated 10/09/17Pull over spots with cars whizzing past at high speeds. Traffic consistent on Saturday afternoon. Would strongly recommend parking in Wawayanda State Park lot. While parts of the park require a fee, use of the parking lot near headquarters is free year round. See mm 3.9. 07/25/18

Take Route 23 north to Union Valley Road. Follow Union Valley Road about 6 miles to stop sign. From Stop sign, go to second traffic light. Turn left, travel to fork in road (about 2 miles) go left about 1/2 mile to Warwick Turnpike. Turn left. The park entrance is four miles on the left. See Mile 3.6 for directions from I-84 to the trail crossing of Warwick Turnpike. Continue south another 0.4 miles to the entrance to Wawyanda State Park. Ge right 0.2 miles to the headquarters area.

From the parking lot, take the William Hoeferlin Trail (right next to parking lot) North to meet the AT. Overnight or longer term parking with registration at park office. You do not have to pay the park fee if you are only using the parking lot near the park office. The lot really fills up in fall, but there are many other places to park free after Labor Day. 8/4/2017 08/15/17 Update 07/25/18

23 North to Stockholm Vernon Rd exit. Continue about 7.5 miles and make right onto Breakneck Rd. Continue 2.3 mi to Wawayanda Rd. Continue 1.3 mi to Barry Dr N. You'll see a very small town (Highland Lakes, NJ?), and the trail is about .4 miles N of the last side street, Hickory Street.

Room for 1-2 cars on west side of Barrett road, near trail crossing. Other day-hikers were parking .4 miles south, on a side street (Hickory Rd.), but this may not be legal parking. 10/02/06

A usually muddy area that could hold possibly 4-5 cars if parked logically. Did not see signs for no parking and always see cars there pretty much year round. Much easier access to good view of Pinwheel Vista than from NJ 94. Update: Barrett Road parking is legal as long as vehicles are off road and in lot. 07/25/18

Here is the route I used to get to this point from I-84. Take Exit 4E off I-84 near Middletown, NY, towards NY 17. Go east (compass southeast) for about 5 miles to Exit 124. At the end of the ramp go left (south) on NY 17A towards Florida , New York . NY 94 merges and the two routes coincide for a few mile to Warwick. there NY 17A goes left. This is 11 miles from the NY 17 exit. Continue straight ahead on NY 94. In approximately 4 miles the road crosses into New jersey and becomes NJ 94. The trail crossing is 2 miles further just south of the intersection with County Road 515. Parking is on the left.

The parking area is on the east side of NJ 94 just south of the intersection with County Road 515. Parking for 6-8 cars in the official AT parking lot, but there is additional parking for several cars on dirt shoulder just north of the parking lot.Pull off has hot dog vendor during the nicer weather and Heaven Hill Farm has food drinks etc. It can be seen from crossing.
